How Often Should You Get a Haircut?

How often you need a haircut is one of the most common questions clients ask — and the honest answer is that it depends. There is no single rule that works for everyone. The right interval is shaped by your hair type, the style you are maintaining, whether your hair is coloured, and how you feel about the way it looks as it grows.
For short hair, regular cuts are essential to keep the style looking intentional. Most short cuts — pixies, bobs, and structured shapes — need a trim every four to six weeks. Growth shows quickly at this length, and the shape starts to soften or lose definition faster than it does with longer styles.
Medium-length hair generally works well on a six to eight week schedule. This is long enough that the shape has room to grow without looking untidy, but short enough that you will still notice when things start looking a little shapeless or heavy.
Long hair is often the most forgiving when it comes to timing, but that does not mean you can skip trims entirely. Even if you are growing your hair out, cutting off a small amount every ten to twelve weeks removes split ends before they travel up the shaft and cause more damage. Waiting too long usually means more length needs to come off — not less.
If your hair is colour-treated — particularly lightened — more frequent trims help keep the ends looking healthy. Bleached and highlighted hair tends to be drier and more prone to breakage at the ends. A regular trim keeps the hair looking clean and prevents the kind of damage that requires significant length removal later.
Hair texture also plays a role. Fine hair can look stringy or flat more quickly and may benefit from more frequent cuts. Thick or coarse hair is often more forgiving and can go longer between trims without looking overgrown. Curly hair has its own rhythm — some curl types do well with trims every three months, while others are fine going longer.
The clearest sign you need a haircut is that your hair stops behaving the way you want it to. If the ends feel rough or tangled, if your style has lost its shape, or if split ends are visible when you look at the ends against the light, it is time to book an appointment. Waiting until things are noticeably bad usually means you will lose more length than you planned.
If you are not sure what schedule makes sense for your hair specifically, ask at your next appointment. A stylist who knows your hair can give you a more accurate recommendation than any general guide — and help you plan ahead so that your cuts fit into your budget and schedule without surprises.
