Best Hair Care Routine for Coloured Hair

Best Hair Care Routine for Coloured Hair

Coloured hair — whether it is a full colour, highlights, balayage, or a toner — requires a different approach to care than natural hair. The colouring process changes the structure of the hair shaft, making it more porous and more vulnerable to fading, dryness, and damage. A good routine does not have to be complicated, but it does need to be consistent.

Start with your shampoo. Regular shampoos are often too harsh for coloured hair — they strip the colour faster and can leave the hair feeling dry. Switch to a sulphate-free, colour-safe shampoo. These are gentler on the hair and help the colour last longer. If you have lightened hair, a purple or blue shampoo used once or twice a week will help neutralize brassiness.

Wash your hair less frequently if you can. Every wash is an opportunity for colour to fade. Most people with coloured hair do well washing two to three times a week. On non-wash days, dry shampoo can help manage roots and extend the time between washes.

Conditioner is not optional. Coloured hair loses moisture more easily than natural hair, and conditioner helps seal the cuticle and restore softness. Apply it from mid-length to ends — not the roots — and leave it on for at least two minutes before rinsing.

Once a week, use a deep conditioning mask or treatment. This is especially important if your hair has been lightened. Look for masks that contain ingredients like keratin, argan oil, shea butter, or hyaluronic acid. Apply it after shampooing, leave it on for five to ten minutes, and rinse with cool water to help seal the cuticle.

Heat protection is non-negotiable. Every time you use a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron without protection, you are accelerating colour fade and adding stress to already-processed hair. Apply a heat protectant spray or cream before any heat styling, and keep your tools at a moderate temperature.

Sun exposure fades colour faster than almost anything else. In summer, wearing a hat or using a UV-protective hair product can make a noticeable difference in how long your colour lasts.

Finally, book your maintenance appointments on time. Waiting too long between colour services means more work is needed to get back to where you were, which means more stress on the hair. Your stylist can recommend the right interval based on your specific service — whether that is every four weeks for root coverage or every three to four months for balayage.

A good routine is the difference between colour that looks fresh for weeks and colour that fades in days. It does not require expensive products — just the right ones, used consistently.
